I enjoyed myself, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is one of those movies that gets better and better as it progresses, though it may have started shaky it does redeem itself at the end of it.
If you loved the first one, you’ll love this one and if you hated the first then you will hate this one because it’s bigger, better and more Shazam-ier than the first one.
The third act is amazing, it takes you on such a rollercoaster ride, and you go from cheering to being sad to being happy, however, I do wish that they stuck to that decision, because it got a little bit heavy and dark in that third act and it’s that heavy dark undertone that exists throughout the film which is great and that would have given the film that much needed depth and layer but due to the film being very family centric it makes sense as to why they didn’t commit to that one choice and why they softened the blow by having a certain demigod come in and save the day.
I loved that the film explained why there was a lack of Gods and magic in the DCEU, I also find that Shazam! Fury of the Gods has got some holes in it which hurts the film but the film more than makes up for it in sheer entertainment value and heart, this film could be seen more than once and still be enjoyed and that’s thanks to the charming cast and how they’re able to land the humour just perfectly.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods works perfectly when it’s a superhero film that centres on family, it fails when it tries to be other things that don’t add much value to the bigger picture, though it’s a shame that the DCEU is over because it would have been interesting to see that universe with magic and gods now.
Overall, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a good time at the movies for the whole family, it’s got some flaws but the pacing, action sequences and the film’s heart is just so joyous you can’t help but fall in love with shazamily and root for them.
