“She’s not dying she’s just having an existential crisis”.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is good from start to finish; it packs a punch though that punch can get a little bit too preachy but I’m not going to get into any of that because I don’t want to get into my own existential crisis.
Barbie is a well-made film that’s also fun as hell and is so meta, I love that it takes itself seriously but also at the same time it’s as un-serious as they come and that’s because everyone committed, and no one was holding back.
I mean Barbie is played wonderfully by Margot Robbie who plays fun, sad and in crisis so well, the way she navigates Barbie being in the real world and Barbie in Barbieland is something else, while on the other hand, Ryan Gosling was made for Ken, that’s the role he was born to play.
It’s clearly for women but there’s some stuff in there for men too, I guess I’m just trying to come up with the perfect words of what exactly this movie does and what it’s about, but I honestly can’t. It’s the perfect mixture of everything you’d want in a film, fantastical, funny, and full depth but ultimately it does say something important, and it never forgets to entertain you.
It’s a movie about a doll who has an existential crisis and there’s some stuff about feminism, self-discovery, thoughts of death and being a woman. So, this movie juggles a lot and sometimes it does tend to get away from Greta, but she manages to recover in dazzling style.
Overall, Barbie is impressive from the performances, the visuals (I mean it looks good, and the production design and wardrobe are fantastic), and the music is good, the themes and direction are good there’s just too much goodness here.
