Renfield isn’t anything new under the sun and it definitely doesn’t do anything to elevate itself or the genre because you can clearly tell that it’s influenced by films that are better than it because Renfield is just a little bit pedestrian and doesn’t try to carve out its own path.
However the two Nics are so fantastic in this and I want to see them in more films together, Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage do their absolute best with their characters of Renfield and Dracula, it’s a joy whenever they’re together in a scene and they really do sell the humour and it’s good honest fun.
Awkwafina on the other hand, I fear that she doesn’t sell the character for me and it’s a shame because she really could have delivered a stunning performance if she just tried to add layer and depth to an otherwise predictable and depth-less character, and there were times when I kinda wished that another actress had played Rebecca Quincy.
The problem of the film is that the writing depends way too much on the humour and it doesn’t really think about the other parts that would make it a stronger film.
Though it doesn’t push the limits in the humour and action sequences the film is highly entertaining and it definitely does grab your attention with its mild gore. While also being visually appealing, the images are neon-tinged, and this makes the colours have a slight feel of horror.
The fight scene at Renfield’s apartment is a stand-out, it was absolutely awesome and if all of them were that good and gory it would have made the film better.
Overall it’s a good watch if you’re looking for something that’s gory but not too gory, something that has a decent amount of action and mayhem and a decent enough amount of humour that actually lands.
